Unique Trekking Experience
The Trek to Salkantay – Machu Picchu is one of the most breathtaking routes for trekking to Machu Picchu. This adventure is enhanced by a visit to the stunning Humantay Lagoon, making it a top choice among Peru trekking tours. Unlike the traditional Inca Trail trek, the Salkantay route provides a more secluded experience, ideal for those looking to explore the natural beauty of the Andes without the crowds.
Your journey begins with a convenient vehicle transfer from Cusco to Soraypampa, where you’ll set up your campsite. This direct access allows you to maximize your time in the breathtaking Peruvian landscape. Soraypampa serves as the gateway to this unforgettable trek, offering spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and a perfect starting point for your adventure.
After establishing camp, trekkers embark on a hike to Humantay Lagoon, located at an elevation of 4,200 meters. The moderately challenging trail rewards hikers with stunning views of snow-capped peaks and lush valleys. Upon reaching the lagoon, the striking turquoise waters provide an incredible visual experience, making it a highlight of many Peru trekking tours. The vibrant color of the lagoon results from mineral-rich waters fed by surrounding glaciers, creating a magical atmosphere.
Salkantay Pass
The next leg of the journey takes you to Salkantay Pass, the highest point of the trek at 4,600 meters. This challenging ascent is a key highlight, offering panoramic views of the majestic Andes. The sight of Nevado Salkantay towering above is awe-inspiring. After taking in the breathtaking scenery, trekkers begin their descent into warmer valleys, showcasing the diverse ecosystems of the region and solidifying its status as one of the best hikes in Machu Picchu.
Throughout the trek, you’ll have opportunities to interact with local communities, learn about their traditions, and savor delicious regional cuisine. The warm hospitality of the locals adds a rich cultural dimension to your adventure. Engaging with these communities provides valuable insights into their daily lives and customs, enhancing the overall experience of trekking to Machu Picchu.
Aguas Calientes and Machu Picchu
The trek culminates in Aguas Calientes, where trekkers prepare for their visit to Machu Picchu. With options for Machu Picchu guided tours, you can delve into the history and significance of this iconic site. Exploring Machu Picchu is an unforgettable experience, surrounded by dramatic mountains and steeped in ancient history. Guided tours offer valuable context, revealing the architectural genius of the Incas and their connection to the land.
Conclusion
The Trek to Salkantay, especially with the inclusion of Humantay Lagoon, is ideal for nature and adventure lovers seeking alternative treks to Machu Picchu. It offers a deep connection to the landscape and Peruvian culture, creating lasting memories with every step. Whether you are considering Inca Trail permits for the classic route or exploring the best hikes in Machu Picchu, the Salkantay trek stands out as a remarkable adventure in the heart of Peru. This journey not only highlights the stunning natural beauty of the Andes but also provides a unique glimpse into the vibrant culture that has flourished in this region for centuries.

All transportation, accommodation, meals and especially having a ticket into Machu Picchu and the train and transport back to Cusco meant there was no detail i had to do. And I cannot forget the adventure!! I was so happy with Americo that he organised every other tour for me. I went to Peru see amazing places, which Americo delivered and I left knowing I have a friend always in Peru. If you have a chance, ask Americo about Urubambaann h2023-09-09what an adventure A total of three days of cycling with Americo, 1 day of Sacred Valley, 1 day of Red Valley and a day at the Siete Laguna. Beautiful environment. Americo takes you further into nature than any other guide ever would. The downhill character is of a high level, but everyone does this at their own pace. Highly recommended for real adventurers.Oliver P2023-08-31Sacred valley black downhill mountain biking tour I did the sacred valley black downhill mountain biking tour. Americo was an awesome guide and we rode some amazing trails. I did fall once though and cut my arms quite badly. However we were riding again straight away and even visited a pharmacy to get my arms cleaned up. The bikes were top notch and serviced to the highest level. If you want to ride some unforgettable trails I highly recommend this tour!!Mobile004365554122023-06-23Top De enige echte manier om sacred valley te bezoeken. Americo brengt u naar plaatsen waar je de hele dag alleen rijdt en je voelt je in het paradijs. Ook is hij een topgids die veel geduld heeft en je veel assisteert. Een echte aanrader dus!Omri V2022-10-12First Downhill in my life, could not have been better I went on single day Downhill tour, which apart from the astonishing and unique ride consisted of a great lunch and a visit to a Sauna. It was my first time going properly Downhill, after years of only trail riding, and I enjoyed every minute. Everything in the tour was well organized, no problems whatsoever, great Commencal bike and gear. This tour enabled me to start pushing my limits on a bike, because I knew I was in good hands. If you're into mountain biking in general, even not so experienced, and are looking for an adrenaline rush and great views & experience, riding with BikingPeruTrek absolutely has to be on your bucketlistCorentin T2022-09-27Incroyable Incroyable journée de DH avec Americo ! C'était super je recommande vraiment !Ian C2021-10-29Fantastic MTB Downhill for Experienced Riders I spent two days with Americo and can't thank him enough for making my Peru trip. We did the Maras Moray trip on the first day and that was a great run with plenty of sections to get excited about. The scenery was incredible and everything was completely organized by Americo and the team. The second trip was unbelievable also. Started the first run at 4400 meters through some great sections followed by a hot spring soak then on to another high mountain pass starting around 4400 meters again. This run saw the five bikers on the trip get a total of six punctures between us and a few broken spokes which were all sorted out by the team. The bikes supplied were all high end Polygon duel suspension MTB's which ate up the terrain. Thanks guys !Juan Diego G2019-12-25Buenas bajadas Buenas bajadas con muy buenas cletas, rutas diferentes y nuevas pero el guia que nos toco no era tan rapido
